in between fate & destiny

Up High

Hello In Between blog readers, Yemisi Blake here.

The community I’ll be working with during this project is Andover Estate Youth Club. Using a space within the estate, local young people come together to do arts and development projects, and also just to hang out. The centre is run by Orlando, who is quite new on the patch and has high hopes for the young people he works with. I’ll be exploring themes of fate and destiny through writing with a group of 14-19 year olds. I’m really excited about the project, especially because I’m working with young people who are growing up quite close to where I did.

Some of the best projects I worked on have required me to look at my own youth and childhood creatively. It’s a place I like to go back to, even if it’s just to remember the amount of time I spent ‘doin nothing’. Those were the good old days. An age when hanging around in the park was a totally acceptable pass time. Some of the best conversations, ideas and experiences I’ve had have come out of this ‘downtime’, times of relaxation and comfort. My hope for the next few weeks is to learn and be inspired, be creative with and encourage the people I’m working with.

I’ll keep you posted on how it goes.
